What a great way to end the season!
It all started badly, with two periods of frost in April. However, with vegetation much less advanced than last year due to a cooler February, the impact on the upcoming harvest will be minimal!
May : The weather is changeable, with a sharp drop in temperatures just as flowering has begun across all our plots. These last few days of May will determine the quantity of grapes in the 2022 harvest.
June : The flowering period passed quickly and smoothly at the beginning of the month with the return of warm weather, just before a spell of rain. This rain (the first since early May) was welcome, alleviating the effects of water stress, which was already being felt. The exceptional weather in the last few days of June (very bright sunshine and up to 36°C under cover) has caused the vines to grow day and night at a frenetic pace, and we are already planning to harvest around 20 August, if everything is not dry by then!
July : The month began with seasonal temperatures, favourable for the onset of veraison. However, the subsequent heatwave (with temperatures reaching around 39°C) slowed down veraison, which nevertheless benefited from rainfall at the end of the month. Despite this, ripening stages remain highly uneven within the same plot.
August : After the first half of August, which was marked by a third major heatwave, the end of the month saw a return to more temperate conditions, accompanied by some long-awaited rain. On 20 August, a light but steady rain fell all day in Santenay.
Monday 29 August : We are starting the harvest. For 11 days, between 25 and 27 pickers will be harvesting our 16.5 hectares, with one Chardonnay plot per day. This year, we are starting with MORGEOT, then LA COMME before moving on to ALOXE CORTON. Our Polish grape pickers are efficient under the beautiful sunshine, with only one storm, which everyone will remember because it was so sudden, short but violent, and we were lost in the long rows of PULIGNY!
The harvest is beautiful and abundant, both red and white. I am a very happy winegrower for my last harvest in charge of the staff in the vineyards!
Tuesday 27 September : SIMON and his team are racking the last cuvée of the 2022 harvest. This plot of POMMARD has never produced such beautiful grapes in such large quantities. In the vats, the juices are intense and fruity, promising a well-rounded wine with good ageing potential.
More broadly, the red wines appear rich and deeply colored, with fine tannic structures and vibrant fruit, while maintaining a pleasing freshness.
The white wines are currently in the cellar, where they are completing their alcoholic fermentation in oak barrels. Generosity, minerality, and freshness seem to be the defining traits of this 2022 vintage, which will likely produce beautifully balanced wines.
