Vendanges 2019

2019

The frosts on April 5 and 14 affected our estate in varying degrees. The lowest temperatures (-3°C, even -4°C) were recorded in CHASSAGNE and LADOIX and on our Burgundy red plot in the lower part of PULIGNY.

April ended with very mild temperatures (up to 25°C), which greatly accelerated growth and completely changed the appearance of the vines in just a few days. Heterogeneity is the defining feature of this year, both within the same plot and on the same vine.
At the beginning of June, the first flowers were observed in the “Clos des Cornières” and Simon and I began to discuss the harvest dates. Following his first tour of the plots, we are planning to harvest between September 15 and 20.

Cold weather returned in mid-June, just as flowering was in full swing. This would have an impact on the subsequent harvest volumes. In July, hot and windy conditions gradually exacerbated the drought. Extreme temperatures of up to 40°C, combined with very low humidity, caused some sunburn damage. Rainfall during the last weekend of July affected the entire vineyard, but with highly variable totals: 73 mm in Ladoix and only 6 mm in Santenay.

The intense heat in August and early September caused water stress but no blockages. As a result, the grapes ripened significantly, leading to the decision to bring forward the harvest date. On Wednesday, September 11, the entire team was on hand to harvest our 16 hectares, from Santenay to Aloxe Corton via Chassagne Montrachet, Meursault, and Pommard. This year, with our team of 25 to 27 harvesters per day, we will be harvesting for 10 days, under the blazing sun on some afternoons...

The heatwave harvest

As last year, we harvested grapes that were perfectly ripe, sweet, and bursting with sunshine. Our technical resources enable us to control fermentation/maceration speeds so that extraction is maximized but not excessive... With fewer heat waves than in 2003, the grapes retained all their acidity, giving us hope for wines with excellent aging potential, both red and white. The only downside is that the quantity is really not there! While not as disastrous as 2016, the excellent 2019 vintage will not be available to everyone!
